Geography
Hillcrest Village, nestled in Midtown Toronto, is a mature neighbourhood renowned for its unique geographic location atop the Davenport Escarpment. The area’s diverse topography adds a distinctive charm to its streets, with old trees and uniquely shaped houses creating a tranquil atmosphere, away from the bustling city life. The community’s boundaries stretch from St. Clair West in the north to Davenport Road in the south, and from Oakwood Ave in the west to Bathurst Street in the east.
History
The history of Hillcrest Village dates back to 1840 when an Englishman named Robert John Turner established his home here, calling it “Bracondale.” By 1884, a small village formed around his property, Bracondale Village, at the intersection of Christie and Davenport. In 1909, Bracondale Village was annexed by the City of Toronto. Shortly after, Turner’s descendants subdivided the Bracondale estate, naming the land “Bracondale Hill Park.” In 1937, the Bracondale house was sold to the city, demolished, and replaced by Hillcrest Park, marking the end of the Turner family’s ownership.
Real Estate
The northern part of Hillcrest features homes built between the 1800s and 1900s, exuding historic charm and character. Most detached houses near Hillcrest Park were constructed between 1910 and 1930, showcasing period architecture that has been well-preserved over the years.
Community Life
Hillcrest Village boasts a vibrant community life centred around the Hillcrest Shopping Center on St. Clair Avenue West. This shopping area, operated by independent retailers, offers a wide range of products, meeting the daily needs of residents. Small convenience stores and independent shops on Davenport Road and Vaughan Road also provide further convenience. The neighbourhood is also home to one of Toronto’s largest farmers’ markets, attracting residents who value natural and organic foods.

The Hillcrest Community Center, located within Hillcrest Public School on Bathurst St, features a gym and an indoor swimming pool. Just north, the Wychwood Public Library offers various programs for children throughout the year.
