Summer Hill History
The Summer Hill community is named after a vacation home established by transportation magnate Charles Thompson in 1842. Today, the community is located right where the Summer Hill Park house once stood. Thompson’s original 200-acre Summer Hill estate extended from Yonge Street to Mt. Pleasant Road. Here, Thompson created Summer Hill Park and the Pleasure Grounds, offering spaces for riding, games, and swimming. After Thompson’s death in 1860, his estate was divided and sold by his heirs, and the area was re-planned as a residential neighborhood.
Summer Hill Amenities
Living in Summer Hill is convenient, with shops and restaurants located at Yonge Street and Summerhill Avenue within walking distance. Additionally, it is just a short distance from Toronto’s famous Bloor-Yorkville shopping district and the commercial hub at Yonge and St. Clair. It is a community that perfectly balances tranquility and urban convenience.
Summer Hill Housing
The original houses in Summer Hill are mainly semi-detached homes and Victorian and Edwardian detached houses built between 1880 and 1915. Many of these homes lack driveways, but residents can pay a nominal annual fee to the government for street parking. The community also features a large number of modern townhouses and a few low-rise luxury condominiums, mostly built between the 1980s and 1990s.
Summer Hill Transportation
Living in Summer Hill offers excellent transportation options. A short walk will take you to the Summerhill station on the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line. Additionally, the community’s location along the Yonge Street corridor provides easy and quick access to downtown Toronto and major highways for those who drive.
